MIR4659A is transcribed as a primary transcript (pri-miRNA), processed into a stem-loop precursor (pre-miRNA), and ultimately into the mature miRNA, which associates with the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC)[1]. Transcriptomic analyses have found that MIR4659A, specifically hsa-miR-4659a-3p, is upregulated in human peripheral blood in the context of viral infection (e.g., COVID-19), suggesting a role in regulating immune response and potentially viral replication[5]. Diseases associated with MIR4659A include muscular dystrophy and cystic echinococcosis, though its precise pathological mechanisms remain largely unexplored[1]. No drugs are currently known to target MIR4659A directly, and there is no established mechanism of action or safety concerns documented for therapeutic modulation of this miRNA. hsa-miR-4659a-3p may, however, serve as a biomarker for immune activation during infection[5].
