MicroRNA 4664 (MIR4664) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule of about 21 nucleotides, part of the microRNA family found in humans, and encoded by the MIR4664 gene. Like other microRNAs, MIR4664 functions post-transcriptionally to regulate gene expression by binding target mRNAs, leading to reduced translation or enhanced degradation of the target transcript. Although systematic studies have identified MIR4664 as differentially expressed in certain cancers, such as lung adenocarcinoma, its individual biological and pathological roles remain under-characterized compared to better-studied miRNAs. It is not considered a direct therapeutic target (e.g., receptor or enzyme), but rather is of interest as a potential research biomarker or component of gene regulatory networks in cancer. Currently, there are no drugs that directly target MIR4664, and no safety concerns specific to this miRNA have been reported in the literature. MIR4664 operates as a microRNA, binding in a sequence-specific manner to messenger RNA (mRNA) targets (typically the 3' untranslated region), leading to suppression of gene expression either through: - Inhibition of translation, - Deadenylation and mRNA degradation, - (Very rarely) Direct mRNA cleavage. These are canonical microRNA mechanisms and apply to MIR4664 by its classification as a microRNA.
