Overview

MicroRNA 4672 (MIR4672) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule expressed in humans that belongs to the microRNA family, which negatively regulates gene expression at the post-transcriptional level by binding mainly to the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of target mRNAs. This process results in either inhibition of translation or accelerated degradation of the target mRNA, thus fine-tuning diverse cellular functions such as development, differentiation, proliferation, apoptosis, and immune regulation. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short single-stranded RNA molecules (about 21-25 nucleotides long) involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in eukaryotes. MIR4672 is curated in public databases (such as miRBase) and named according to human genomic conventions (hsa-mir-4672). While the physiological and pathological roles of MIR4672 specifically have not been well characterized in scientific literature as of now, microRNAs as a class are integral to cell fate determination and disease phenotypes, acting as rheostats that buffer and reinforce gene expression networks rather than act as binary switches. Therapeutic modulation of microRNAs is an area of active research; microRNAs may be targeted by antisense oligonucleotides (antagomiRs) or miRNA mimics for disease modulation, but this approach is generalized and not unique to MIR4672. No approved drugs directly target MIR4672.
