microRNA 4677 is a small, non-coding RNA molecule classified as a microRNA, transcribed from the human genome and processed by the microRNA biogenesis pathway. It regulates gene expression by incomplete complementary binding to the 3' untranslated regions of target mRNAs, resulting in suppression of translation or degradation of these mRNAs. miR-4677-3p, a specific mature form, is frequently downregulated in gastric cancer and other tumors, where its overexpression suppresses proliferation, migration, and invasion of cancer cells, primarily through inhibition of CEMIP and modulation of PI3K/AKT signaling. miR-4677’s levels are being studied as biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and prognosis, and it is proposed as a potential therapeutic target in oncology[1][3][4].
Drugs such as PI3K/AKT inhibitors block proliferation and metastasis downstream of the miR-4677 axis by counteracting the pathway promoted by reduced miR-4677 expression. miRNA mimics or inhibitors modulate cellular levels of miR-4677, thereby altering cancer cell behavior in preclinical models.
