Overview

microRNA 4679-2 is a small, single-stranded, non-coding RNA molecule in humans. MicroRNAs regulate gene expression by binding to complementary sequences on target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), causing mRNA degradation or translational repression. The mature microRNA is encoded in the genome, processed from a primary transcript via a canonical biogenesis pathway that includes Drosha and Dicer enzymes, and is loaded into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC). Thousands of microRNAs, including MIR4679-2, exist in humans, each potentially playing roles in the fine-tuning of gene expression and cellular homeostasis. Many well-studied microRNAs are involved in critical biological pathways—such as cell cycle control, apoptosis, cancer progression, and developmental patterning. While some microRNAs serve as disease biomarkers or therapeutic targets, there is no evidence that microRNA 4679-2 currently fulfills those roles. Manipulation of microRNAs is an active area of biomedical research with potential future clinical relevance.
