MicroRNA 4695 (MIR4695, hsa-mir-4695) is a small, endogenous, non-coding RNA molecule in humans that regulates gene expression at the post-transcriptional level, primarily via messenger RNA (mRNA) destabilization or inhibition of translation[1]. Among its described functional roles, miRNA-4695-3p has been shown to help prevent apoptosis (programmed cell death) in stored red blood cells (RBCs)[2]. This function contributes to the preservation of RBC integrity during storage periods, making MIR4695 a potential biomarker for evaluating the safety and quality of stored blood products[2]. There are no currently known drugs that directly target MIR4695, nor is it regarded as a classical therapeutic target (such as a receptor or enzyme). Its primary relevance presently lies in research contexts, especially in blood banking and transfusion medicine, as a molecular marker rather than as a target for pharmacological intervention.
