MicroRNA 4698 is a small, non-coding RNA molecule (20–24 nucleotides) classified as a microRNA. It functions primarily as a post-transcriptional regulator by binding to complementary sequences in the 3′ untranslated region (UTR) of target mRNAs, thereby leading to mRNA degradation or inhibition of translation. miR-4698 is encoded on chromosome 12 and has demonstrated activity as a tumor suppressor in glioblastoma cell lines, inhibiting cell proliferation and targeting the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway, including genes such as PI3KCA, PI3KCB, PDK1, AKT1, Rheb, MDM2, mTOR, and CREB1. Expression studies indicate its downregulation in certain cancers (glioblastoma, conjunctival cancer, gastric cancer stem cells) and in COPD. It is a promising molecule for gene therapy and as a biomarker for disease diagnosis and progression.
Inhibition of miR-4698 (if upregulated in disease) or overexpression (if downregulated) as a gene therapy strategy. miR-4698 itself suppresses gene expression by binding to the 3′ UTR of target mRNAs, leading to reduced protein levels via mRNA destabilization and translational inhibition.
