Overview

MicroRNA 4707 (miR-4707) is a small, non-coding RNA of the microRNA family that regulates gene expression predominantly through sequence-specific binding to complementary sites in the 3′ untranslated regions (3′UTRs) of target mRNAs. miR-4707 exists in at least two mature forms (miR-4707-3p, miR-4707-5p), both of which can modulate different cellular pathways. For example, miR-4707-5p promotes apoptosis by directly suppressing the expression of cell survival proteins such as API5, while miR-4707-3p influences neuronal differentiation by repressing targets including SLC6A1, NDRG2, SORCS2, and TSPAN6, thus affecting synapse maturation and neuronal development. Genetic variants in the seed region of miR-4707 can influence disease risk, notably in glaucoma, by altering miRNA-mRNA interactions (e.g., affecting CARD10 and the NFκB pathway), impacting cell survival mechanisms in retinal ganglion cells and possibly other tissues. Although miR-4707 is not a conventional drug target (like a receptor or enzyme), its regulatory network is relevant to several pathophysiological processes, including apoptosis, brain development, and neurodegeneration
