MicroRNA-4709 (miR-4709)

Target
miR-4709
Molecular classification
MicroRNA, Non-coding RNA, Gene regulator
01

Overview

MicroRNA-4709 (miR-4709), also known as hsa-miR-4709, is a small non-coding RNA molecule that regulates gene expression post-transcriptionally. It functions primarily by binding to the 3′ untranslated regions of target mRNAs, leading to mRNA degradation or translation inhibition. miR-4709-3p, the active mature strand, has been implicated in the regulation of renal fibrosis, particularly through targeting Large Tumor Suppressor Kinase 2 (LATS2) and modulating the Hippo signaling pathway. Aberrant expression of miR-4709-3p is associated with progression of renal fibrosis and chronic kidney disease. It is considered a potential biomarker for fibrotic kidney diseases and presents a putative therapeutic target for intervention in fibrotic processes[2][1].

Mechanism of action

Not applicable; small RNAs like miR-4709 are currently not directly targeted by approved drugs, but are considered potential gene therapy or RNA interference targets[2].

03

Biological functions

Post-transcriptional regulation of gene expressionRegulation of fibrosis (notably renal fibrosis)Involvement in Hippo signaling pathwayModulation of extracellular matrix proteins (e.g., collagen, fibronectin)
04

Disease associations

Renal fibrosisChronic kidney disease (CKD)Diabetic nephropathyRenal interstitial fibrosisPotential broader role in cancer (general to microRNAs, but insufficient MIR4709-specific cancer evidence)
05

Safety considerations

The main therapeutic challenge is off-target effects and delivery for RNA-based therapies, potential for unwanted modulation of gene networks due to broad microRNA action[2][3]
06

Biomarkers

miR-4709-3p expression (associated with renal fibrosis progression and disease state)[2]
