Overview

microRNA 4715 (miR-4715, hsa-miR-4715-3p) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule classified as a microRNA, typically composed of 21–23 nucleotides. Like other microRNAs, it functions primarily by binding complementary sequences on specific messenger RNAs, mediating post-transcriptional gene silencing through inhibition of translation or degradation of the target mRNA. Recent studies have implicated miR-4715-3p in the modulation of immune cell processes, particularly macrophage infiltration and pyroptosis, through a regulatory axis with the protein Gasdermin D during the progression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Its role as a disease biomarker is emerging in liver fibrosis, although there is only limited evidence so far for this specific microRNA in other diseases such as cancer. As a microRNA, miR-4715 is not classified as a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or typical drug target, but instead is a regulatory RNA molecule.

Mechanism of action

Small RNA-induced silencing, typically through binding to the 3' UTR of messenger RNA to suppress translation or promote mRNA decay

03

Biological functions

Gene regulation (post-transcriptional silencing of target mRNA)Regulation of immune response (specifically in macrophage function)Modulation of cell death pathways, potentially affecting pyroptosis via interaction with Gasdermin D
04

Disease associations

Liver disease, specifically nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and fibrosis progressionOther (preliminary evidence in cancer, limited to a few studies)
05

Safety considerations

Safety concerns and therapeutic challenges have not been described for this specific miRNA; in general, targeting microRNAs may present off-target effects and challenges in delivery
06

Biomarkers

Potential biomarker for fibrosis progression in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
