Overview

MicroRNA 4718 (miR-4718) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Like other microRNAs, miR-4718 functions by binding to complementary sequences in target mRNAs, leading to translational repression or destabilization of the mRNA[2][4]. miR-4718 has been identified in human plasma and is associated with several cellular and disease processes, notably acting as a potential biomarker for predicting cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in cancer patients[1]. Its baseline expression correlates with increased risk of kidney injury during cisplatin chemotherapy, likely due to its regulatory effects on genes within key signaling pathways such as ErbB, NF-κB, TGF-β, and AMPK[1]. While microRNAs can play roles in various cancers and have been explored as diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive biomarkers, miR-4718 is not currently a direct therapeutic target nor are there known drugs that modulate it for clinical benefit[1][3][4].
