Overview

MicroRNA 4722 (miR-4722, hsa-miR-4722) is a small, endogenous, non-coding RNA molecule classified as a microRNA, present in the human genome[1][5]. Its mature form, miR-4722-5p, binds to complementary sequences within target mRNAs, repressing translation or promoting mRNA degradation, thus regulating gene expression post-transcriptionally[1][2][5]. Recent research indicates elevated expression of miR-4722-5p in the serum of patients with Alzheimer's disease and in an amyloid-beta-induced neuronal cell model, supporting its candidacy as a **biomarker** for Alzheimer's disease. Correlative studies show its expression negatively associates with cognitive function scores (MMSE), with functional enrichment of its predicted target genes suggesting involvement in pathways regulating cell division, protein folding, binding activities, and cAMP/mTOR/neurotrophin signaling[1]. There are no current drugs directly targeting miR-4722, and it is not itself considered a classical therapeutic target (like receptors or enzymes), but research is ongoing into its biomarker potential and possible modulation in neurodegenerative disease contexts.
