MicroRNA 4738 (MIR4738)

Target
MIR4738
Molecular classification
microRNA, Non-coding RNA, Regulatory RNA
01

Overview

MicroRNA 4738 (MIR4738, hsa-mir-4738) is a small non-coding RNA molecule belonging to the microRNA family, transcribed as a primary transcript and processed to a mature miRNA that is incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally. It can bind imperfectly to target messenger RNA (such as COL1A2) and inhibit translation or cause mRNA destabilization, thereby affecting biological processes such as inflammation, apoptosis, and cell survival. MIR4738 has been associated with regulation of the NF-κB signaling pathway, cellular communication via exosomes, and plays a role in disease processes such as osteoarthritis and possibly certain cancers.

Mechanism of action

Inhibiting or mimicking MIR4738 modulates downstream genes (e.g., COL1A2) and inflammation via the NF-κB pathway. miRNA mimics inhibit gene expression by binding to mRNA 3′-UTR, leading to translational inhibition or mRNA degradation.

Safety considerations

Not specifically reported, but general challenges with miRNA therapies include potential off-target effects, immunogenicity, and delivery specificity
