MicroRNA 4800 (miR-4800) is a small, endogenous non-coding RNA molecule classified within the microRNA family. Like other microRNAs, it plays a significant role in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression by binding to complementary sites in target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), leading to their degradation or the inhibition of their translation. miR-4800 has been identified as a tumor-suppressor microRNA: restoration of its expression in breast cancer and several other cancers reduces cell proliferation, inhibits cell migration, and promotes apoptosis. miR-4800 achieves tumor suppressor effects via downregulation of genes implicated in epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, migration, and cancer stem cell maintenance, such as CD44, CXCR4, ROCK1, and vimentin. Dysregulation (typically downregulation) of miR-4800 has been observed in multiple tumor types, including breast, cervical, colorectal, esophageal, gastric, glioma, liver, and pancreatic cancers, where its loss correlates with increased malignancy and metastatic potential. There are no current clinically approved drugs that directly target this microRNA.
