Overview

MicroRNA 4802 (MIR4802) is a small non-coding RNA (miRNA) gene found in humans; its gene symbol is MIR4802 and miRBase annotation is hsa-mir-4802. Like other miRNAs, MIR4802 is produced through a multi-step biogenesis pathway involving transcription by RNA polymerase II, processing by Drosha and Dicer nucleases, and incorporation of the mature miRNA into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC). RISC uses MIR4802 as a guide to bind complementary sequences in target mRNAs, usually within the 3′-UTR regions, resulting in repression of translation and/or mRNA destabilization. While general functions of miRNAs include control over cell proliferation, differentiation, survival, and participation in diverse diseases, direct functional and disease roles for MIR4802 remain limited in scientific literature; familial hypercholesterolemia is the only disease currently linked via gene-disease association databases. There is no evidence that MIR4802 serves as a clinical biomarker nor that drugs specifically target this miRNA.
