Overview

MicroRNA 487a (miR-487a) is a short non-coding RNA molecule, part of the microRNA family, involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression by binding to complementary sequences in the 3′ untranslated regions of target mRNAs, leading to translational repression or mRNA degradation[3]. miR-487a is produced via canonical microRNA biogenesis pathways—first transcribed as a primary transcript (pri-miRNA), processed by Drosha and Dicer enzymes, and incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC)[3]. It plays an important regulatory role in endothelial cell proliferation (notably in response to disturbed shear stress, promoting a pro-atherogenic phenotype) by targeting mRNAs such as CREB binding protein (CBP) and p53, affecting cell cycle proteins like Rb and cyclin A[1]. miR-487a has also been found upregulated in various human cancers and vascular diseases, and high expression has been associated with poor prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma[1][4]. As a microRNA, it is emerging as both a potential therapeutic target and a prognostic biomarker in oncology and cardiovascular disease[1][3][4].
