Overview

MicroRNA 491 (MIR491) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule in the microRNA family. It regulates gene expression at the post-transcriptional level by binding to complementary sequences in target mRNAs, leading to mRNA degradation or translational inhibition. MIR491 is widely described as a tumor suppressor downregulated in multiple malignancies. Restoration of miR-491 function results in cell cycle arrest, increased apoptosis, reduced migration and invasion, and inhibition of tumor growth. Its direct targets include IGF2BP1 in non-small cell lung cancer, hTERT in cervical cancer, GIT1 in oral squamous cell carcinoma, TP53 and Bcl-2 in pancreatic cancer, EGFR and CDK6 in glioblastoma, BCL-XL in ovarian cancer, TPX2 and MMP9 in hepatocellular carcinoma, as well as cell cycle and apoptosis regulators in immune cells. MIR491 is considered a potential therapeutic target and biomarker in oncology due to its role in disease progression and patient prognosis.
