Overview

MicroRNA 496 (miR-496) is a short, non-coding RNA molecule classified as a microRNA that regulates gene expression at the post-transcriptional level by targeting the 3' untranslated regions of specific mRNAs, resulting in mRNA degradation or inhibition of translation[1][3]. It is involved in the regulation of cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation, notably in neural progenitor and cancer cells[2]. In triple negative breast cancer, miR-496 directly targets and downregulates the mRNA of Developmental endothelial locus-1 (Del-1), acting as a tumor suppressor by inhibiting cell proliferation, migration, and invasion[3]. It is consistently downregulated in several types of cancer, including colorectal cancer and triple negative breast cancer, and its expression is associated with better clinical outcomes, suggesting its utility as a prognostic biomarker[3][4][5].
