Overview

MicroRNA 499a (miR-499a) is a short, non-coding RNA molecule classified as a microRNA, encoded within an intron of the myosin heavy chain 7B (*MYH7B*) gene on chromosome 20q11.22. It functions primarily in post-transcriptional gene regulation through direct base-pairing with target messenger RNAs, leading to their degradation or translational inhibition. miR-499a plays crucial roles in cardiac development, myocardial differentiation, and injury response, and is detectable in blood as a sensitive biomarker of cardiomyocyte injury. In cancer, miR-499a displays cancer-specific, sometimes opposing, effects, acting as either a tumor suppressor or an oncogene depending on cellular context and tumor type. Genetic polymorphisms affecting miR-499a expression or maturation can modulate disease risk, including metabolic, cardiovascular, and neuropsychiatric disorders.
