Overview

MicroRNA 500a (miR-500a) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule that functions as a post-transcriptional regulator of gene expression by binding to complementary sequences in target messenger RNAs. miR-500a exists in both -5p and -3p mature forms, and its expression has been implicated in several biological processes and diseases. In particular, miR-500a-5p modulates oxidative stress response genes and is upregulated in some breast cancer cell lines, especially those that are estrogen receptor positive. It influences the progression of breast cancer and may serve as a prognostic biomarker in this context. Like other microRNAs, miR-500a does not encode proteins but exerts its activity primarily through sequence-specific interaction with mRNA targets, leading to their degradation or translational repression[1][4].

Mechanism of action

Not directly applicable, as microRNAs generally function by binding to complementary sequences in target mRNAs and causing their degradation or inhibition of translation

03

Biological functions

Post-transcriptional regulation of gene expressionRegulation of oxidative stress responseRegulation of cell proliferationRegulation of apoptosis
04

Disease associations

Cancer (notably breast cancer, implicated in progression and prognosis)Possibly gastric cancer
05

Safety considerations

Therapeutic targeting of miRNAs can face challenges including off-target effects, delivery mechanisms, immune activation, and unintended regulation of multiple genes
06

Biomarkers

Expression of miR-500a-5p may serve as a biomarker for prognosis in estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer
