Overview

MicroRNA 507 (miR-507) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule from the microRNA family, encoded in the chrXq27.3 miRNA cluster on the X chromosome. It acts as a post-transcriptional negative regulator of gene expression, primarily by base-pairing to complementary sequences in the 3' untranslated region of target mRNAs, resulting in mRNA degradation or translation inhibition. miR-507 is structurally similar to miR-506-3p and is known to target genes such as ZEB2 and VEGFR-1, influencing processes critical to cancer biology, including migration, invasion, glycolytic metabolism, and chemotherapy sensitivity. It is generally considered a tumor-suppressive microRNA, with loss or downregulation observed in various cancers. Modulation of miR-507 or its pathway is primarily of research interest for developing RNA therapeutics and as a biomarker for cancer prognosis and chemotherapy response

Mechanism of action

By binding to complementary sequences in the 3’ UTR of target mRNAs, miR-507 suppresses translation or promotes degradation of those transcripts, thereby modulating the expression of target genes involved in EMT, proliferation, metabolic pathways, and chemoresistance (such as ZEB2, VEGFR-1, NRF2, ELK3, PDK4)
