MicroRNA 509-1 is a small non-coding RNA molecule that acts as a post-transcriptional gene regulator. It is transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of a precursor molecule and processed to its mature form by Drosha and Dicer, which are ribonuclease enzymes. The mature miR-509-1 is incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) and guides the complex to imperfectly base-pair with target mRNAs, causing inhibition of translation or destabilization of these messages. Biological studies highlight its anti-oncogenic role, particularly in breast cancer, where it can suppress tumor progression through targeting genes such as SOD2. Additionally, miR-509-1 is implicated as a molecular biomarker in disease prediction and subtyping. While not directly drugged in the clinic, its roles continue to be assessed for therapeutic targeting, and research into its function expands our understanding of disease mechanisms and regulatory RNA networks
