MicroRNA 509-3 (miR-509-3p) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule of the microRNA family that participates in post-transcriptional gene regulation by binding to target mRNA transcripts, leading to translational inhibition or destabilization of these targets[2]. miR-509-3p is implicated in the control of cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), particularly in colorectal cancer, where overexpression promotes tumor growth and metastasis by directly downregulating tumor suppressor proteins such as PHLPP2[1][2]. High tissue expression of miR-509-3p serves as a poor prognostic indicator in colorectal cancer. The role of miR-509-3p in cancer varies by context and tissue type, with both oncogenic and tumor-suppressive activities reported in different tumors[1][2]. Experimental inhibition of miR-509-3p can reverse some of its oncogenic effects in cellular models, but there are currently no approved drugs that directly target this miRNA in clinical use[1][2].
