Overview

microRNA 5094 (miR-5094) is a small non-coding RNA molecule identified in humans, part of the microRNA family, with the primary function of post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. miR-5094 is rapidly upregulated in response to ionizing radiation in various human cell lines (including HeLa, Jurkat, and human T cells). Its principal described molecular target is STAT5b, a key transcription factor that regulates cell growth, survival, apoptosis, and cell cycle genes. By binding directly to the 3'-UTR of STAT5b mRNA, miR-5094 suppresses STAT5b expression, resulting in decreased transcription of downstream genes such as Bcl-2 and Igf-1, inhibition of cell proliferation, and potential modulation of the cellular response to radiation. While miR-5094 is not a therapeutic target itself, its activity is highly relevant to cellular stress responses and may have implications for cancer biology and radiotherapy sensitivity. No drugs are currently known to directly modulate miR-5094, but it may have biomarker potential for radiation-induced cellular responses or proliferation suppression in malignant and immune cells
