Overview

MicroRNA 517a (miR-517a) is a member of the C19MC family of microRNAs and acts as a small, non-coding RNA molecule involved in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression[2][3]. It is implicated in a range of biological processes, notably in both tumor suppression and oncogenic activities depending on tissue and context. In hepatocellular carcinoma, miR-517a functions as an oncomiR—promoting cell proliferation, migration, invasion, tumorigenesis, and metastatic dissemination both in vitro and in vivo[3]. In other cancer types, such as colon cancer, bladder cancer, and glioma, miR-517a has also been reported to inhibit cell proliferation and induce apoptosis, indicating its variable function as either an oncogene or a tumor suppressor[1]. The regulatory effects of miR-517a include interactions with key cancer-related pathways (e.g., MAPK/ERK, nuclear factor-κB), cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis through caspase activation and other mechanisms[1][3]. Genomic amplification and epigenetic changes affecting the 19q13.41 locus are associated with its expression. Overall, miR-517a represents a potential biomarker and therapeutic target in oncology, with complex roles that are highly context-dependent[1][3].
