Overview

MicroRNA 518a-1 (MIR518A1) is a small, non-coding RNA belonging to the miRNA class that regulates gene expression at the post-transcriptional level by binding to target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), leading to their translational repression or degradation. Like other microRNAs, MIR518A1 is first transcribed as a primary transcript (pri-miRNA), processed in the nucleus by Drosha to form a precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), and finally cleaved in the cytoplasm by Dicer to generate the mature miRNA, which operates as part of the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC)[1][2]. MIR518A1 has been associated with the regulation of biological processes in multicellular organisms and is implicated in several diseases, especially certain cancers and diseases of the female reproductive system[1][4]. Members of its cluster have been identified in cancer-associated microRNA panels, but there is no current evidence for direct drug interactions or therapeutic targeting[2].
