microRNA 518c (miR-518c) is a small, non-coding RNA of the microRNA class, encoded in the human C19MC cluster, and functions by regulating the expression of multiple target genes at the post-transcriptional level. miR-518c, in particular the 5p arm (miR-518c-5p), is implicated in the control of cell migration, proliferation, and tumor growth; its overexpression is associated with increased growth and metastasis of oral cancer cells as well as inclusion in aggressive molecular HCC subclasses. Like other microRNAs, miR-518c does not code for a protein, but acts through binding to complementary sequences in messenger RNAs (mRNAs), leading to mRNA degradation or translational repression, influencing pathways relevant to cancer and development. There are currently no approved drugs targeting this microRNA directly, but its functional characterization suggests potential as a target or biomarker in oncology, with oncogenic and metastasis-promoting properties identified in experimental models.
