MicroRNA 518d is a small (about 22 nucleotides), non-coding RNA molecule belonging to the microRNA family, located within the large C19MC cluster on chromosome 19. It regulates gene expression post-transcriptionally, typically by binding the 3' untranslated regions of target mRNAs, leading to mRNA degradation or translational repression. miR-518d is implicated in cellular processes such as proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation, and may be dysregulated in certain cancers and developmental contexts. Its broad role in gene regulatory networks makes it of research interest, but limits its specificity as a therapeutic drug target.
miR-518d acts via base-pairing with complementary sequences in target mRNAs, resulting in translation repression or mRNA destabilization. Antisense oligonucleotides targeting miR-518d would theoretically block its activity.
