MicroRNA 518f is a member of the large C19MC microRNA cluster on human chromosome 19q13.42, which is primate-specific and primarily expressed in undifferentiated tissues like placenta and stem cells. MiR-518f, as with other miRNAs, is a small non-coding RNA that regulates gene expression chiefly at the post-transcriptional level by binding to complementary sequences within target messenger RNAs. Overexpression of members of the C19MC cluster, which includes miR-518f, has been linked to certain aggressive cancers, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma. Although its precise biological targets and functions remain poorly characterized, the C19MC family plays roles in cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and stem cell-associated processes. There is current interest in these microRNAs as biomarkers for cancer subtypes and potential (though challenging) anti-cancer therapeutic targets[1][2][3].
miR-518f, like other microRNAs, mediates post-transcriptional gene silencing by binding to target mRNA(s), typically resulting in translational repression or mRNA degradation[3].
