microRNA-5196 (miR-5196, hsa-mir-5196) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule belonging to the microRNA family, which post-transcriptionally regulates gene expression by binding to complementary sequences on target mRNAs, primarily at the 3' untranslated regions, leading to mRNA degradation or inhibition of translation[4]. miR-5196 has been identified in circulating plasma and is associated with risk of stroke, making it a candidate biomarker for vascular diseases, particularly stroke[2]. Thousands of potential gene targets for miR-5196 have been predicted, but only limited experimental validation exists, and its specific cellular and tissue functions remain to be fully defined[2][3]. As with all microRNAs, its dysregulation may contribute to disease pathogenesis through widespread network effects on gene expression. While miR-196 is a well-studied member of the microRNA family, miR-5196 is less well-characterized in current literature, but its role as a biomarker for stroke risk is supported and gene-regulatory roles are inferred from general microRNA biology[2][4]. No evidence suggests that "microRNA 5196" is invalid, misspelled, or otherwise incorrect.
