MicroRNA 519e (miR-519e) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule encoded within the large, primate-specific C19MC microRNA cluster located on chromosome 19q13.42[1]. Like other microRNAs, miR-519e regulates gene expression post-transcriptionally by binding to complementary mRNA sequences, resulting in gene silencing or degradation[3]. Members of the C19MC family, including miR-519e, are minimally expressed in differentiated tissues but can be highly upregulated in certain cancers, such as hepatocellular carcinoma, where they contribute to oncogenesis by promoting cell proliferation, migration, and invasion[1]. They also appear to be regulated by epigenetic mechanisms, including methylation[1]. The unique expression patterns and oncogenic functions of miR-519e make it a candidate biomarker for certain cancer subtypes[1], although it is not currently directly targeted by approved therapeutic agents.
MicroRNAs act by binding to complementary sequences on target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), leading to their degradation or inhibition of translation, thereby downregulating gene expression[1][3]. For miR-519e specifically, as a member of the C19MC cluster, its upregulation is associated with increased cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, particularly in hepatocellular carcinoma[1].
