microRNA 520d (miR-520d; also designated as hsa-miR-520d) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule from the microRNA family that regulates gene expression by binding to target mRNAs, promoting their degradation or repressing translation. It is particularly implicated in the regulation of chondrogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells and chondrocyte metabolism—mainly via direct inhibition of HDAC1—and plays a role in diverse cellular functions such as proliferation, differentiation, senescence, and apoptosis. Dysregulation of miR-520d has been reported in cancer (glioma, colorectal), osteoarthritis (affecting cartilage health), and neurodegenerative disorders (such as Parkinson's disease), suggesting its utility as a biomarker and a putative therapeutic target, though no drugs currently target it directly[1].
