Overview

MicroRNA 520f (miR-520f) is an endogenous non-coding RNA of approximately 18–22 nucleotides that regulates gene expression post-transcriptionally, mainly by binding to the 3'-UTR of target mRNAs and repressing their translation or causing mRNA degradation[2][1]. miR-520f belongs to the miR-520 cluster located on chromosome 19, which is highly expressed in human embryonic stem cells and is involved in the maintenance of pluripotency and chromatin regulation[1]. Functionally, miR-520f acts as a tumor suppressor in several cancers, including non-small cell lung cancer and gastric cancer, where its decreased expression is linked to increased cell proliferation, migration, and invasion[2][4]. Targets of miR-520f include TM4SF1 (in NSCLC, affecting VEGF and EMT pathways) and SOX9 (in gastric cancer, regulating Wnt/β-catenin signaling)[2][4]. miR-520f and its family members are under investigation as potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets, though miRNA therapy faces challenges including off-target effects and delivery difficulties.
