MicroRNA 525 (miR-525) is a short, non-coding RNA molecule classified as a microRNA, encoded on human chromosome 19. miR-525 regulates gene expression post-transcriptionally by base-pairing with specific mRNA targets, leading to repression or degradation of those transcripts. Functionally, miR-525 acts in diverse biological contexts as a regulator of cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion. In several cancers, miR-525 can serve either as a tumor suppressor (by targeting F-spondin 1 and inhibiting downstream oncogenic pathways like FAK/Src/PI3K/Akt) or an oncogene (promoting migration/invasion in liver cancer by targeting ZNF395)[2][3][4][5]. Expression levels of miR-525 are abnormally regulated in various diseases (e.g., cancers, osteoarthritis), and it is being actively studied for its clinical utility as a biomarker and as a therapeutic target, especially for improving the efficacy of radiotherapy[4][6].
Experimental approaches include: - Use of miR-525 mimics to suppress tumor cell migration/invasion and promote apoptosis[2][3] - Use of miR-525 inhibitors to activate oncogenic signaling (by derepressing SPON1, for instance)[2][3] - Modulation of miR-525 activity to enhance sensitivity to radiation[6]
