microRNA 527 (miR-527) is a small non-coding RNA molecule belonging to the microRNA family, which regulates gene expression at the post-transcriptional level by binding to the 3′-untranslated regions (UTRs) of specific target mRNAs, leading to their degradation or inhibition of translation[4]. miR-527 has been implicated in various cancers, sometimes acting as a tumor suppressor and in other contexts as an oncogene. It is involved in the regulation of cell proliferation, cell cycle control, migration, invasion, and cancer stemness by repressing different targets including UBE2A, PHLPP2, Sp1, BRF2, PHF21B, and FBXW7[1][2][3][5]. Its expression and function appear highly context- and tissue-dependent. No drugs directly target miR-527 currently, but manipulating its expression is being explored for cancer therapy and prognosis.
