MicroRNA 539 is a member of the microRNA family: small (20–24 nucleotides), non-coding RNA sequences that regulate gene expression by targeting mRNAs for degradation or translational repression. miR-539 functions primarily as a tumor suppressor across a wide spectrum of solid tumors and some non-malignant diseases. Its mechanism involves binding to specific gene transcripts such as EGFR, IGF-1R, SOX5, FSCN1, and others, leading to reduced protein output of those oncogenes and resultant cancer cell growth inhibition, apoptosis, and reduction of metastatic behavior. miR-539 levels are often decreased in tumors, and restoration of its expression in preclinical models leads to dramatic reductions in tumor growth and invasiveness.
Restoration of miR-539 expression inhibits tumor cell growth and migration, promotes cancer cell apoptosis, and sensitizes drug-resistant cancer cells to chemotherapy.
