Overview

MicroRNA 541 (miR-541) is a small, non-coding RNA molecule of the microRNA family that mediates post-transcriptional gene regulation by binding target mRNAs and inhibiting their expression. It is found in humans (hsa-mir-541) and has been implicated in regulating diverse cellular processes, including cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and differentiation. In cancer, miR-541-5p promotes proliferation, migration, and invasion while inhibiting apoptosis of hepatocellular carcinoma cells, partly by targeting the tumor suppressor ZIC1 and modulating the Wnt/β-catenin pathway[1]. In cardiovascular disease, miR-541 acts as a negative regulator of cardiac hypertrophy by antagonizing hypertrophic responses to angiotensin II[2]. In inflammatory diseases such as acute lung injury, miR-541-5p modulates alveolar epithelial cell proliferation and inflammatory signaling by targeting HMGB1 and MAPK pathways[4]. There are currently no direct drugs targeting miR-541 in clinical use; investigational strategies in preclinical models include antagomirs and miRNA mimics for functional modulation. As a microRNA, MIR541 is considered a valid therapeutic target for molecular interventions in cancer, cardiovascular, and inflammatory diseases[1][2][4][5].
