Overview

MicroRNA 542 (miR-542) is a non-coding RNA molecule that regulates gene expression by binding to complementary sequences in messenger RNAs, resulting in translational repression and gene silencing. The most studied forms are miR-542-3p and miR-542-5p. miR-542 plays diverse roles in biological processes such as apoptosis, cell cycle control, cell proliferation, mitochondrial function, and osteoblast differentiation. It acts predominantly as a tumor suppressor in cancer by downregulating oncogenic pathways and is implicated in various signaling cascades, including the Wnt/β-catenin, ERK, JAK2, and PI3K/AKT pathways. miR-542 is also linked to muscle atrophy by promoting mitochondrial dysfunction and increased SMAD2/3 phosphorylation via TGF-β signaling, and it negatively regulates bone formation by targeting bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP-7). Aberrant levels of miR-542 contribute to disease progression in cancer, muscle wasting diseases, and bone pathologies, making it a potential biomarker and therapeutic target[1][2][3].
