MicroRNA 548ae-2 is a member of the microRNA (miRNA) class, which consists of short (20–24 nucleotide) non-coding RNAs involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting the stability and translation of target mRNAs. miRNAs such as MIR548AE2 are produced as part of a primary transcript, processed into a precursor and then to a mature miRNA that guides the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to regulate gene expression[3]. MIR548AE2 itself is not a receptor, enzyme, transporter, or other canonical drug target, but instead plays a gene regulatory role and is not established as a direct therapeutic target[3].
