MicroRNA 548ah (MIR548AH) is a member of the miR-548 family, classified as a small, non-coding regulatory RNA molecule (microRNA) typically 20-24 nucleotides in length. It is encoded by the human genome and commonly designated as "hsa-mir-548ah" in databases. Like other microRNAs, miR-548ah acts mainly at the post-transcriptional level to silence or degrade specific mRNA targets, thereby influencing gene expression. This particular microRNA has been shown to be significantly upregulated in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) during immune activation phases of chronic hepatitis B infection, where it regulates immune responses by targeting IFN-γ receptor 1 mRNA and thereby modulating cytokine signaling. MIR548AH may participate in major cellular signaling pathways, including Wnt, MAPK, and TGF-β, and is considered a potential biomarker and therapeutic target in HBV and possibly other immune-related diseases. Its broad impact on cellular processes and immune regulation means that therapeutic interventions involving MIR548AH require careful consideration of off-target and safety profiles.
