MicroRNA 548aj-1 is a member of the miR-548 family of primate-specific microRNAs. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short (about 20–24 nucleotides) non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally, primarily by binding to complementary sequences on target messenger RNAs (mRNAs), leading to translational inhibition or mRNA destabilization. MIR548AJ1 is encoded in the human genome and gives rise to a small RNA that is believed to function in the regulation of gene expression. Specific biological or pathological functions for MIR548AJ1 itself have not been detailed in the literature to date, but closely related family members such as miR-548j are implicated in processes such as cell invasion and metastasis in breast cancer, acting by targeting signaling molecules like Tensin1 and affecting focal adhesion and cytoskeletal regulation[1][3][4]. There is currently no direct evidence that MIR548AJ1 has a distinct or established role as a therapeutic target, biomarker, or disease gene.
