MicroRNA 548ak (MIR548AK) is a member of the primate-specific miR-548 gene family, encoding a short non-coding RNA (20–24 nucleotides) involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. Like other miRNAs, it is transcribed as a primary transcript, processed by Drosha and then Dicer to a mature miRNA, which associates with the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to recognize and regulate target mRNAs, often leading to translational repression or mRNA degradation. The miR-548 family is notable for its large size, poor evolutionary conservation, and dynamic sequence divergence. Functional analyses of the whole family indicate roles in a variety of cellular processes and signal transduction pathways, including actin cytoskeleton regulation, cell cycle, and several oncogenic pathways.
