Overview

MicroRNA 548aq is a primate-specific, poorly conserved member of the large mir-548 family of miRNA genes. MIR548AQ is transcribed in humans as a short (20–24 nucleotide) non-coding RNA functioning to regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally by inhibiting translation or destabilizing mRNAs. Its mature strand miR-548aq-3p is implicated in modulation of angiogenic activity of ECFCs, and its expression is downregulated by far infrared radiation, with potential biomarker utility for CAD patients with CKD. The broader mir-548 family is associated with signaling processes and cancers, likely due to their roles in gene regulation. As of now, there are no characterized interacting drugs or direct therapeutic applications, but miR-548aq-3p downregulation may indicate improved response to certain non-pharmacological therapies.
