MicroRNA 548ay is a primate-specific small non-coding RNA gene (miRNA) involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression, acting primarily by binding to target mRNAs to either inhibit their translation or promote their degradation[3]. MIR548AY belongs to the large miR-548 gene family, which is notable for its poor sequence conservation, distribution across most human chromosomes, and evolutionary origin from transposable elements[1][2][3]. Members of the miR-548 family regulate a wide array of biological processes, including cell proliferation, inflammation, and potentially oncogenesis; however, the specific functions and disease associations of MIR548AY itself remain largely uncharacterized[3]. The mature miRNAs are produced through canonical Drosha/Dicer processing and act via the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC) to control gene expression[3]. There is currently no evidence that MIR548AY itself serves as a direct therapeutic target, biomarker, or is modulated by any approved drugs.
