MicroRNA 548d-2 (MIR548D2) is a non-coding RNA molecule belonging to the microRNA family. MicroRNAs are short (20–24 nucleotide) RNAs that regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally, most often by binding to complementary sequences in the 3′ untranslated regions (UTRs) of target mRNAs, thereby inhibiting translation or promoting degradation. MIR548D2 gives rise to mature forms such as miR-548d-3p, which has been shown to promote cell proliferation and inhibit apoptosis in certain cancer cell lines, especially breast cancer, by directly targeting and downregulating the tumor suppressor gene TP53BP2[1][2][3]. Increased DNA copy number of miR-548d-2 correlates with poor prognosis in breast cancer[1]. Additionally, miR-548d-3p has been predicted computationally as a potential candidate for antiviral therapy against several Flaviviridae viruses by virtue of sequence complementarity to viral capsid genes, but this role remains experimental[3]. MIR548D2, like other miRNAs, represents a regulatory node in complex signaling and homeostatic cellular networks, with aberrant regulation linked to cancer, cell survival, and potentially infectious disease[1][2][3].
