MicroRNA 548h-5 is a human-specific member of the miR-548 family. Like other microRNAs, it acts by binding to complementary sequences in target mRNAs, causing their degradation or repression of translation. The miR-548h-5 has been implicated in regulation of inflammatory responses, particularly by modulating the expression and release of HMGB1, a mediator of inflammation and tissue injury. Down-regulation of miR-548h-5 is associated with increased HMGB1 levels in human amniotic epithelial cells and may contribute to the pathogenesis of preterm birth, suggesting a role in reproductive biology and immune regulation.
