Overview

MicroRNA 548i-3 is a primate-specific, short non-coding RNA that belongs to the large and diverse mir-548 gene family, which is derived from Made1 miniature inverted-repeat transposable elements (MITEs). MIR548I3 is transcribed as part of a longer primary transcript, then processed by Drosha and Dicer enzymes to generate a mature microRNA incorporated into an RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which mediates gene silencing primarily by translational repression or degradation of target mRNAs. The mir-548 family, including 548i-3, is characterized by significant sequence divergence and low conservation, is mainly found in primate genomes, and plays roles in regulating diverse cellular pathways. Bioinformatic analyses indicate family-wide involvement in signaling pathways and cancer, but specific biological or pathological roles for MIR548I3 remain mostly uncharacterized. Expansive target prediction approaches suggest possible involvement in cancer-related regulation, but no therapeutic interventions or drugs specifically target MIR548I3.
