Overview

microRNA-548j (miR-548j) is a member of the primate-specific miR-548 family of small non-coding RNAs derived from transposable elements. It functions primarily as a regulator of gene expression via post-transcriptional silencing. miR-548j is notable for its role in promoting breast cancer cell invasion and metastasis by directly targeting the mRNA of Tensin1, a focal adhesion protein, thereby activating the Cdc42 signaling pathway that governs cell motility and cytoskeletal organization. Elevated expression of miR-548j is associated with increased invasiveness in breast cancer cell lines and correlates with poorer prognosis and higher rates of metastasis in clinical samples. Additional evidence suggests regulatory roles in angiogenesis and possible involvement in other diseases, but its principal biological significance appears to be as an epigenetic modulator of cancer progression, with potential as a biomarker and hypothetical therapeutic target.
