MIR548K
Molecular classification
MicroRNA (miRNA), Non-coding RNA

Overview

MicroRNA 548k (MIR548K) is a short, non-coding RNA molecule derived from a large, primate-specific miRNA family. It regulates gene expression by binding target mRNAs and inhibiting their translation or promoting their degradation. The MIR548 family members have heterogeneous 'seed sequences' due to evolutionary origin from transposable elements. MIR548K has been implicated in promoting cancer cell growth and mobility, with suggestive roles as an oncomiR particularly in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Its expression and function are still being characterized, but current evidence supports its importance in cell invasion, metastasis modulation, and possible utility as a clinical biomarker. The scientific understanding of MIR548K remains less developed than major miRNAs, but evolving evidence supports further investigation into its biological roles and potential as a therapeutic or diagnostic target.
