Overview

MicroRNA 548o-2 (MIR548O2) is a member of the miR-548 family, a large and poorly conserved class of primate-specific microRNAs. This non-coding RNA regulates gene expression by binding to target mRNAs and modulating their stability and translation. Like other members of the family, microRNA 548o-2 is involved in regulation of cell proliferation, apoptosis, migration, invasion, and the epithelial-mesenchymal transition—a process relevant in cancer metastasis. Aberrant regulation of miR-548 family members has been associated with cancer and inflammation. Studies show that altered expression levels of miR-548m (a closely related family member) are found in various breast cancer subtypes, with potential roles as both tumor suppressor and oncogene depending on context. Available evidence is at the family level, as specific functional and disease associations for MIR548O2 (microRNA 548o-2) are not separately reported in the literature. There are currently no approved drugs targeting microRNA 548o-2, and it is not considered a canonical therapeutic target such as a protein enzyme, receptor, ion channel, or transporter.
